Rudolph August Helin
Resident of Redwood City
April 20, 1926 – Sept. 25, 2013

Rudolph Helin passed away peacefully on Sept. 25 after a valiant struggle following a stroke he suffered 19 months ago. Rudy was born in Chicago, Illinois, but spent his boyhood in the Aland Islands, Finland. In 1939, he returned with his family to Chicago where he attended grammar school and North Park Academy. He attended the University of Illinois for one semester, but was drafted into the Army in 1944. Starting in 1945, he served with the U.S. Counter Intelligence Corps in Germany, where he was involved with War Crimes Trials. He graduated from North Park Junior College with an Associate's Degree in 1948. While in Chicago, he worked for many years for Hillman's Food Stores, before moving to California where he enjoyed a successful career in real estate for 47 years. Rudy worked for August Associates before buying and expanding Rupert Taylor Real Estate with two colleagues. Following the Rupert Taylor years, Rudy also worked for Cashin and Company before moving to Alain Pinel. Rudy loved real estate and particularly loved helping people find the perfect home. He was a long-time member of Rotary and of Peninsula Covenant Church; he enjoyed golf and travel (often combining the two), the good life, and his many friends.
Rudy was predeceased by his first wife, Janet Wallin, whom he married in 1950 and to whom he was married for 51 years; and by his second wife, Joan Herlihy, whom he married in 2003 and to whom he was married for 10 years. He is survived and mourned by his daughter, Jacquelyn Helin and her husband, Robert Glick of Santa Fe, NM and their two children, Kathryn and William. He is also survived by three step-children, Patricia Jennings, Michael Herlihy and Elizabeth Hobart, and by his sister and her husband, Elizabeth and Clifford Jackson of Lake Geneva, WI, numerous nieces and nephews, and many devoted friends.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service to be held Monday, October 14 at 10 AM at Peninsula Covenant Church, 3560 Farm Hill Boulevard, Redwood City (650-365-8094). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Rudy's memory be made to Rotary Foundation (866-9-ROTARY or www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/take-action/give; Peninsula Covenant Church Music Fund, 3560 Farm Hill Boulevard, Redwood City, CA 94061; or the United Church of Santa Fe Music Fund, 1804 Arroyo Chamiso, Santa Fe, NM 87505.
