Long-time coastside resident Richard Michael Whipp died peacefully and surrounded by family and friends on January 9, 2014. Richard was born in San Francisco and spent most of his early life in San Mateo. In 1964 he met Hazel Hardman while working in Paris; eight months later they were married. In 1972 they decided to raise their children in Half Moon Bay, and they have lived there ever since. Rich was a wonderful father to children Bronia, Byron, Alexander, and Derek – always ready to support in any and all ways. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Kaiya, Lexie, Eli, Cleome, Bix, Miles, and Xan and the steadfast older brother of Joe and Linda. Everyone who knew Richard recognized him for his love of learning, his interest in sports, his positive attitude and strong work ethic, and his constant and undiminished love for his wife, Hazel. He has affected us in more ways than we can count, and we will miss him fiercely.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 15, at 1:30 pm at the Miller-Dutra Coastside Chapel in Half Moon Bay, California. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the Yosemite Conservancy or your own favorite conservation or literacy charity.
