Alice Kathleen Salomone passed away on December 31, 2012 in Albuquerque, NM, where she lived for the past few years. A devoted Coastside resident for all her life, Alice always had a smile and friendly greeting for everyone she met. She was born in San Gregorio on April 23, 1919 to Manuel V. and Gloria P. Silva (Mesquite), who emigrated from the Azores. She was a proud graduate of Pescadero High School. Alice's three older siblings, Mary Rose, Frank, and Joseph predeceased her. Alice married Joseph A. (Beans) Salomone (long-time proprietor of the HMB Bakery with his brother Felix) in December 1944 and they were blessed with three daughters, Karen Jo, Kathleen, and Kandice. Alice was widowed in 1963. In the early 1970s, Alice met Marcel (Frenchie) Dussault and they spent many happy years together until his death in 1988. An active member of the community, Alice worked at the Half Moon Bay PG&E Office for 23 years. Fluent in Portuguese, Alice often helped recent arrivals from Portugal with securing utilities and settling into their new homes. A dedicated member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and Past President of the Vista Del Mar Chapter, she was the chapter's oldest living member. Alice was also an active member of the HMB Fireman's Auxiliary and a member of Our Lady of the Pillar's Rosary Sodality. She was also a volunteer at Senior Coastsiders before receiving their loving care. Alice is survived by her three daughters, her dear sister-in-law and friend, Margaret Cleary, and several loving nieces and nephews. She is well known for her extensive rooster collection, which began with a traditional "lucky" Portuguese rooster many years ago. A memorial mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Pillar Church on January, 5, 2013. Alice was laid to rest at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Cemetery. Donations may be made in her honor at Senior Coastsiders, 535 Kelly Ave, HMB, CA 94019, or to the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign (search "Kandice Salomone" to find the memorial page).
