Condolence & Memory Journal

Monty, I'm so sorry I missed you! I have been trying to find Hampton (or Peters) descendants for a long time. Monty, your Mother, Eva Marie, was my 1st Cousin, ie her Father and my Mother (Fern Alexander) were siblings. I've been working on our family history for over 20 years. I have some great family photos I'd like to pass along, so if anyone is reading this, who is interested (or knows someone who is) I would be glad to send them to you. Rest in Peace, Monty! Your Cousin, Sherry Steele (Everett, WA--steel75642@aol.com)

Monty was a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with. I'll always remember his wit, his laugh, and his calm demeanor.

Monty was my first boss at the Survey. He was the best. I learned so much from him and with him about geology and sediment analysis and being a good person. I looked up to him and he never failed me. I was blessed to have him mentor me. He will be missed.

I miss you brother. nearly 44 years of research and fun. Laughs, high seas, Hawaii, Alaska. It couldn't have been any better. Thanks for taking the time to guide and mentor me.

Rest in peace Monty. You left a wonderful legacy in the world and I will miss you. It was special sharing so many aspects of life with you: an office in grad school, classes at Stanford, starting families and watching our kids play together, cross country in 1970 to New England, and then 5 years later back to the USGS in Menlo, where we found our career niches.

I'll never forget the great times we had together in our research, and Monty's wonderful steady-handed guidance branch-chiefing. The world would be a better, and more productive, place if all the bosses of the world had the loving touch that Monty had.
